Cantor Fitzgerald said today that it intends to launch an electronic futures exchange next month where traders can bet on movie box office numbers.
The company said it expects producers and studios to use the market for hedging their investments, while fans might speculate on the success of their favorite actors or directors.
"People love movies, and this is a way for them to profit from what they know," a Cantor spokesperson told Reuters. "Let's say you love 'Avatar,' and you loved 'Titanic,' and (director) James Cameron's coming out with his next movie -- so you want to get in the game."
