More than five million people attended the victory celebration after the Chicago Cubs won their first World Series since 1908. The Cubs are odds-on favorite to repeat, although the Boston Red Sox are gaining a lot of attention in Las Vegas.
Once again, CG Technology – the gaming technology company behind the top Vegas sports books – has provided its opening odds for win totals of all 30 Major League Baseball teams. The Chicago Cubs are the overwhelming favorite to win the most games. Though the team lost Aroldis Chapman to free agency, the bullpen will now be anchored by Wade Davis, who the Cubs received in a trade with the Kansas City Royals.
In the American League, the Cleveland Indians and the Boston Red Sox share the top spot for expected wins in Las Vegas. The Baltimore Orioles, despite winning more games in the American League than any team since manager Buck Showalter took over (and returning the same lineup) is only set at 81.5 wins.
Last year’s prognostication fell flat – proving that our own baseball forecasting was no better than the Wall Street dart throwing we question on a regular basis. Moments after Modern Trader predicted that Arizona would surprise everyone and win the National League, the team lost its best player AJ Pollock to a season-ending injury.
This year, several bets are intriguing. Cleveland is coming off a 94-win campaign and has added Edwin Encarnacion to the heart of its order. More than 100 wins isn’t out of the question.
The Atlanta Braves’ rebuilding process could occur faster than many people expect given its improved lineup that will add a full-year from slugger Matt Kemp. The New York Mets are forecast at 89.5 wins, which will rely almost entirely on an injury-prone pitching staff, and Seattle is an intriguing sleeper to win the AL West with improved pitching.
This year, we expect a repeat of the 2016 World Series. Even though the Cubs will try to become the first team to win two World Series against the same opponent since the Yankees topped the Dodgers in 1977 and 1978, the Indians are the team to beat. Edwin Encarnacion may top 150 RBIs this season.
With that in mind, here is our fearless prediction for 2017…
