October 2016: Finding the next top traders

March 18, 2017 09:00 AM

Our October issue focused on finding the next top traders. Several features highlighted the trend — that only appears to be accelerating in recent months — of crowdsourcing and quantitative systematic ways of finding talented traders. We are in a big data world and social media entrepreneurs are finding innovative ways to spot talent and forecast markets (see “Winner by unanimous decision,” Modern Trader, March 2017).

In the October issue, Garrett Baldwin asked, “Can twitter survive?” in an article detailing the numerous struggles the social media firm was having that made it a highly probable takeover target. For a while it looked like we had gotten ahead of ourselves in those concerns as Twitter (TWTR) embarked on a rally that would take its stock price to yearly highs in the first week of October. Perhaps that was based on the hopes of a white knight sweeping in to save the faltering company. No one has swooped in yet and Twitter has dropped more than 20% since then; and the questions Baldwin raised remain.
