Despite the fact that the majority of Modern Trader subscribers not only preferred Donald Trump as their president, but also predicted a Trump win our editorial team, like most of America and the media, anticipated a Clinton victory.
Our post-election editorial was setting up to recall the memorable missteps of both campaigns, and the challenges that a newly elected Clinton administration would face attempting to re-engage with disaffected working class voters.
But when the final results were in, it was clear that regardless of having just witnessed perhaps the most extraordinary political achievement in American history (and an improbable "W" in the Trump column) that it became apparent that CLINTON DEFEATED CLINTON.
Our features editor, Garrett Baldwin, and I collaborated on this Modern Trader post-election editorial. As much as I appreciate sharing the byline with him, the credit for this powerful prose goes to Garrett. While we have all been exposed to virulent and divisive hate-speech from the alt-right and alt-left since the election, you should find this opinion piece to be an insightful, intelligent and conversation-provoking postmortem of the Clinton campaign.
Our cover illustrations recalls the infamously incorrect DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN headline from the Chicago Daily Tribune on Nov. 3, 1948...
And the train reference? It's the Capital Line which runs from Washington D.C. to Chicago. If only some Clinton campaign staffer advocated for the optics of having their candidate's travel emit less carbon dioxide by traveling by train...than by plane?
Well, read the editorial here and you will understand the reference.
Have a great Thanksgiving!
