Rep. Grimm, 64 others ask Holder to name independent counsel

AG Holder served

Two weeks after first circulating a letter addressed to Attorney General Eric Holder asking Holder to appoint an independent counsel to take over the investigation into improprieties involved in the MF Global bankruptcy, Rep. Michael G. Grimm (R-N.Y.) officially delivered the letter to Holder having secured 64 signatures of fellow Republican members of Congress.

A press release from Rep. Grimm’s office stated, “Many unanswered questions remain regarding what caused the massive shortfall in segregated customer accounts prior to MF Global’s bankruptcy. There are concerns that special treatment was granted to MF Global due to CEO Jon Corzine’s relationships with regulators. In addition, Jon Corzine has recently bundled over $500,000 … a special counsel would remove even the perception of political favoritism by bringing in an outside special counsel.”

The letter failed to gain bipartisan support despite efforts by the Commodity Customer Coalition to bring on some Democrats.

The Justice Department was aware of the effort and declined to comment.
