MF Global Canada customers are faring better

The Oct. 31 collapse of MF Global and its Canadian subsidiary has shaken basic assumptions about the security of trading in futures contracts as a safe risk-management tool for farmers and their end-user customers. But the Owen Sound Sun Times is reporting how MF Global Canada customers have fared better than the U.S. clients.

Trustees for assets in the Canadian company proceeded within days with the transfer of accounts to an alternative brokerage thanks to intervention by the Canadian Investor Protection Fund and the Investment Industry Regulation Organization of Canada -- investment industry self-regulatory bodies mandated to protect the interests of investors, including commodity futures accounts.
