Cattle, hogs driven by seasonal factors

Hogs: Producers have brought in a few extra sows since August vs. last year. That has remained the case even with lower prices. Though that would imply liquidation of the breeding herd we cannot say it is so. In recent quarters, producers have put more fresh gilts into the breeding herd than we would have expected. Cattle: After weaning in the fall, producers typically bring in planned cull cows. This fall’s beef cow slaughter is following the same pattern. What is even more noticeable this time around is producers, mostly in the Southern Plains, remain active in moving numbers. Forage quality and availability remain the key issue here.
