Short interest leaps in Nasdaq stocks

NEW YORK, May 24, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- At the end of the settlement date of May 13, 2011, short interest in 2,325 NASDAQ Global MarketSM securities totaled 6,604,611,145 shares compared with 6,478,149,066 shares in 2,335 Global Market issues reported for the prior settlement date of April 29, 2011. The mid-May short interest represents 3.23 days average daily NASDAQ Global Market share volume for the reporting period, compared with 3.65 days for the prior reporting period.

Short interest in 490 securities on The NASDAQ Capital MarketSM totaled 405,617,864 shares at the end of the settlement date of May 13, 2011 compared with 399,966,535 shares in 494 securities for the previous reporting period. This represents 4.83 days average daily volume, compared with the previous reporting period's figure of 4.29.

In summary, short interest in all 2,815 NASDAQ® securities totaled 7,010,229,009 shares at the May 13, 2011 settlement date, compared with 2,829 issues and 6,878,115,601 shares at the end of the previous reporting period. This is 3.29 days average daily volume, compared with an average of 3.68 days for the previous reporting period.

The open short interest positions reported for each NASDAQ security reflect the total number of shares sold short by all broker/dealers regardless of their exchange affiliations.
