Nasdaq mid-month short stock interest report

NEW YORK, Sep 24, 2010 (GlobeNewswire via COMTEX News Network) -- At the end of the settlement date of September 15, 2010, short interest in 2,386 NASDAQ Global Market(SM)securities totaled 7,335,423,205 shares compared with 7,272,092,128 shares in 2,391 Global Market issues reported for the prior settlement date of August 31, 2010. The mid-September short interest represents 3.95 days average daily NASDAQ Global Market share volume for the reporting period, compared with 3.91 days for the prior reporting period.

Short interest in 488 securities on The NASDAQ Capital Market(SM)totaled 332,924,197 shares at the end of the settlement date of September 15, 2010 compared with 338,424,233 shares in 487 securities for the previous reporting period. This represents 6.09 days average daily volume, compared with the previous reporting period's figure of 6.49.

In summary, short interest in all 2,874 NASDAQ(R) securities totaled 7,668,347,402 shares at the September 15, 2010 settlement date, compared with 2,878 issues and 7,610,516,361 shares at the end of the previous reporting period. This is 4.01 days average daily volume, compared with an average of 3.98 days for the previous reporting period.

The open short interest positions reported for each NASDAQ security reflect the total number of shares sold short by all broker/dealers regardless of their exchange affiliations. A short sale is generally understood to mean the sale of a security that the seller does not own or any sale that is consummated by the delivery of a security borrowed by or for the account of the seller.
