Futures volume surges at major exchanges in April

CME Group saw volumes rise 31% on an annual basis during April, while IntercontinentalExchange business jumped by 41% for the month.

CME Group traded, on average, 11.9 million contracts a day, with 84% of the month's volume electronic. Total volume was 263 million contracts. It was the exchange's best month since January 2008.

ICE traded 1.4 million contracts a day, with big increases coming in crude oil and forex futures. Total volume was 29.2 million contracts.

Options volume didn't fare as well. The Chicago Board Options Exchange reported average daily volume for April of 5.3 million contracts, up just 6% over April 2009. Total trading volume was 111.4 million contracts for the month of April.

Meanwhile, options volume slipped sharply for the International Securities Exchange. Average daily trading volume for all options contracts decreased 21.2% annually, to 3.3 million contracts a day. Total options volume was 69.2 million contracts.
