Effort to spin off derivatives desks hitting roadblocks

A recent proposal in the U.S. Senate to force banks to shed their derivatives-trading desks is seeing significant opposition.

Critics as varied as the Obama administration to industry lobbying groups have attacked the measure. Banks don't want to lose the lucrative business, while those angling for more regulation contend the requirement would make it even more difficult to keep tabs on the practice.
