Schapiro nominated to head SEC

Mary L. Schapiro was nominated as chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission. She is currently CEO of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority and served as chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) from 1994 to 1996. “I’m looking forward to leading an agency whose mission is so critical to the future economic health of our country,” Schapiro said in a statement.

Gary Gensler was nominated as chairman of the CFTC. He was undersecretary of the Treasury from 1999 to 2001 and assistant secretary of the Treasury from 1997 to 1999.

Bradley G. Griffith will serve a third consecutive one-year term as the vice chairman of the Chicago Board Options Exchange.

Mark H. Thompson Jr. was named director of hedge funds at CME Group. Previously he worked in macro/cross asset sales at UBS Securities.

Marcus Katz was named director of interest rate products at CME Group. Previously he was managing partner of Winnemac Investments LLC.

Clifford J. Weber joined NYSE Liffe as executive vice president, head of product development and strategy. Previously he was an executive at the American Stock Exchange.

Larry Arnowitz, former CEO of GNI Inc., has started an independent introducing brokerage firm, Arnowitz Financial Services, which will focus on international institutional business. He will continue to provide expert witness services for all aspects of the futures business.

Ianthe Zabel joined the Investment Company Institute as senior director, media relations. Previously she was director of external affairs at the CFTC.

Bryan Durkin, Anthony George Gero, William Giannone, William Purpura and Joseph Raia were named members of the Comex Governors Committee at CME Group.

Anthony Davidow, Michael Dieschbourg and Margaret Towle were elected to the board of directors at the Investment Management Consultants Association.

Karel Harbour was promoted to COO at MF Global.
